Wythall School Collaborates with Network Rail and The Tree Council for Tree Planting Initiative

Wythall School has embarked on a collaborative venture with Network Rail, welcoming Lord Peter Hendy, Central route director Denise Wetton, and The Tree Council to participate in a tree planting project within the school’s grounds.

Since 2023, Network Rail staff, in conjunction with local groups, businesses, and West Midlands Railway, have dedicated their time to assist students in enhancing the school’s outdoor environment. This initiative has seen the introduction of numerous trees and plants, aimed at fostering biodiversity and supporting local wildlife.

The ongoing partnership between Network Rail, Wythall School, West Midlands Railway, and the Friends of the Shakespeare Line, comprising local railway volunteers, is envisioned to not only beautify the school’s surroundings but also to inspire students about career opportunities within the railway industry. Additionally, it aims to pave the way for pupils to explore potential pathways through the Network Rail apprenticeship scheme.

Lord Hendy expressed his delight at the flourishing partnership with Woodrush High School and The Tree Council, emphasising the importance of community and environmental stewardship within the railway sector.

Jay Barber, head teacher at Woodrush High School, commended the fruitful collaboration with Network Rail, underscoring its significance in enriching the school’s curriculum and fostering a sense of community engagement among students.

Phil Paulo, head of major tree planting projects for The Tree Council, expressed eagerness to continue supporting Woodrush High School following the successful initial planting project. The involvement of Network Rail volunteers has not only diversified the school’s canopy cover but has also contributed to the creation of a new shelterbelt, enhancing the outdoor environment for students and staff alike.
