Solihull Prepares to Welcome New SEND School

Exciting developments are underway in Solihull as plans for a dedicated special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) school take shape.

The Department for Education has announced the establishment of 16 new schools across England, with four earmarked for the West Midlands region, including one in Solihull.

These schools, catering to nearly 600 children, will play a crucial role in providing specialized support for pupils whose needs cannot be fully met within mainstream education settings.

The Solihull school is poised to offer 150 places for children aged 11 to 19, addressing a significant gap in provision for SEND education in the area.

While specific details regarding the location of the schools and the academy trusts overseeing their operation have yet to be disclosed, Chief Secretary to the Treasury Laura Trott expressed optimism about the transformative impact of these initiatives. She emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring every child has access to high-quality education tailored to their individual needs.

The announcement comes on the heels of a £105 million investment confirmed in the Spring Budget, underscoring the government’s dedication to expanding access to specialized education. Councillor Ian Courts, leader of Solihull Council, hailed the news as a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to support children and families in the community.

Special schools are instrumental in providing tailored support for pupils with diverse needs, including autism, emotional and behavioral disorders, and severe learning difficulties. Education Secretary Gillian Keegan highlighted the vital role these schools play in transforming lives and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring every child receives the support they require.

In conjunction with these developments, a consultation has been launched to explore proposals for utilizing unregistered alternative provision as an intervention to complement school-based education. This initiative aims to further enhance support for children with SEND and ensure they receive the appropriate assistance at every stage of their educational journey.

We encourage members of the community to participate in the consultation process and share their views on these important proposals before the deadline on July 5th.
