Birmingham Airport Unveils New Boarding Lounges in £76.5m Passenger Experience Upgrade

Birmingham Airport has officially opened its newly redeveloped boarding gate lounges as part of a wider £76.5 million investment aimed at improving the passenger experience and terminal efficiency.

The upgrades to Gates 58 to 60 include a complete redesign of the boarding area to ease congestion and support smoother, more punctual departures. The refurbishment features new flooring, energy-efficient lighting, and open balustrades that improve visibility and space throughout the boarding zones. Outdated partitions have also been removed to allow better passenger flow and a more open feel.

Constructed in partnership with Vinci Building, the improved gate lounges reflect Birmingham Airport’s broader ambitions to modernise its terminal facilities following its busiest year on record in 2024.

Al Titterington, Terminal Operations Director at Birmingham Airport, said:

“The latest improvement to these boarding gates is one of several terminal enhancements that will be unveiled as we continue to service historical growth at BHX. Passengers in this area will now enjoy modern new-look boarding lounges which are more spacious, accessible and in line with our current design standards. Most crucially, the gate enhancements will improve the efficiency of the boarding experience over this peak summer period.

We look forward to announcing further details of improvements to our terminal facilities in the coming weeks and months as we expect nearly 14 million passengers this year.”

The investment forms part of the airport’s largest ever annual capital spend, launched in May, with plans focused on enhancing the customer journey and operational performance across the terminal. Additional upgrades are expected to be revealed later this summer.
