Birmingham Airport (BHX) is preparing for its busiest summer holiday season ever, with more than 2.6 million passengers expected to pass through its terminals between 9 July and 31 August 2025. The projected total marks a 5% increase compared to the same period last year, with 1.3 million arrivals and 1.32 million departuresanticipated.

The most popular destination this summer is Palma de Mallorca, with 132,873 passengers jetting off to the sunny Spanish island. Other top choices include Dubai (93,646)Dalaman (71,193)Malaga (73,356), and a noticeable 20% surge in Faro-bound travellers (69,290), attributed to increased flight frequencies.

Travel Made Easier with Relaxed Liquid Rules

Adding to the convenience for holidaymakers, Birmingham Airport has now relaxed its liquid rules, following recent changes to aviation security regulations. Passengers can now:

  • Carry liquids, gels, and pastes in containers of up to 2 litres
  • Bring multiple containers without the need for clear plastic bags
  • Keep liquids and electronics in their hand luggage during security checks

However, passengers are urged to check individual airline and destination airport rules before travel, as not all airports have adopted the same measures.

Airport Issues Summer Travel Tips

To help ensure a smooth journey during peak travel season, Birmingham Airport is reminding customers of key travel tips:

  • Never pack vapes, e-cigarettes or lithium-ion battery devices (e.g. DSLR cameras) in hold luggage
  • Empty insulated bottles or flasks before security; free refill stations are available airside
  • Remove all items from pockets at security checkpoints, including coins, phones and keys
  • Jet2 and TUI passengers flying before noon can use twilight bag drop services the evening before
  • Check-in zones include Zone A for Jet2Zone D for Emirates, and Zones B & C for all other airlines

Terminal Improvements and New Openings

Passengers will also notice ongoing upgrades at the airport this summer. These include expanded gate lounges, baggage handling enhancements, and a refreshed airside offering with new dining and retail outlets.

Recent additions to the departures lounge include:

  • Chaiwalla
  • Shelby + Co, a Peaky Blinders-themed bar
  • Popeyes Louisiana Chicken

Statement from Birmingham Airport

Al Titterington, Terminal Operations Director at BHX, said:

“As we head into the six-week holidays, we’re delighted to be on track to experience our busiest summer season ever with more passengers opting to fly from Birmingham Airport.

This significant uptick in passengers coincides with our ongoing investment into aircraft gate lounge expansions, baggage enhancements and new airside shopping and dining options.

Customers flying out of Birmingham also have the added benefit of leaving liquid containers of up to 2L in their hand luggage. However, we remind all that while this is allowed at BHX, it is not commonplace at all airports, so please check your return or transiting airport restrictions.”
