Birmingham Airport has secured a prestigious global accolade for its environmental practices for the second consecutive year.
The airport has attained Level 3 (optimisation) status in the Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) program, overseen by the Airports Council International (ACI). ACA stands as a benchmark for global carbon management standards within airport operations.
Under this scheme, airports undergo rigorous evaluation and comparison with peers worldwide, aligning their decarbonization efforts and reporting with ACI’s framework.
To achieve Level 3 ACA, airports must fulfill specific criteria in their carbon reduction strategies, including comprehensive measurement, realistic targets, an actionable delivery plan, and robust stakeholder engagement.
Airports at this level demonstrate a commitment to implementing advanced carbon management practices and tools, resulting in measurable reductions in carbon emissions year after year. Additionally, they actively involve their business community in initiating climate action within the airport premises.
Key initiatives at Birmingham Airport include transitioning to a green electricity tariff for the entire airport site and implementing LED upgrades, among others.
Tom Denton, Head of Sustainability at Birmingham Airport, expressed satisfaction with maintaining Level 3 Airport Carbon Accreditation, attributing it to years of collective effort by airport staff and partners. He emphasized the significance of external scrutiny and assessment by ACI as the airport progresses toward its ambitious goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2033.
The airport underscores that maintaining Level 3 accreditation marks a pivotal milestone in its journey towards achieving net-zero emissions by 2033.
