Thousands of transport users across the West Midlands will soon see significant changes to the Ring & Ride and Bus On-Demand services, with fare increases and a new booking system set to take effect over summer 2025.
Transport for West Midlands (TfWM) has announced a major overhaul to its demand-responsive services in a bid to improve user experience and ensure long-term sustainability.
App Changes for Ring & Ride Users
From 23 July 2025, Ring & Ride customers outside Coventry will need to download the West Midlands On-Demand app to book their journeys. The new app, provided by Via, will replace the existing booking platform.
Coventry users will not be affected by this transition, as they are already using the updated system.
Until 23 July, customers should continue to use the current app. TfWM has promised to contact app users directly, both via push notifications and direct messages, to help them prepare for the switch. For those who are unable or prefer not to use the app, the Ring & Ride telephone booking line will remain available.
Fare Increases
From 1 August 2025, fares across both Ring & Ride and West Midlands Bus On-Demand services will rise:
- Ring & Ride
- Adult fare will increase from £1.30 to £2
- Child fare will go from 65p to £1
- Companion fares will now match standard rates
- Children under 5 will continue to travel for free
- On-Demand Services
- Fares will now start from £3 (standard) and £1.50 (concessionary)
- Prices will continue to depend on journey distance
Support for Passengers
TfWM says it is committed to supporting all passengers through the transition, particularly those who may need extra assistance using the new app. Support will include:
- Step-by-step app guides (online and printed)
- In-app notifications and updates
- Clear communications via TfWM’s website, social media, and onboard vehicles
- Frontline staff training to assist passengers directly
New Operating Model Launching in December
These changes come ahead of the launch of a new Target Operating Model for demand-responsive transport in December 2025, approved by the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) in June.
Two new operators have now been confirmed:
- HATS will take over services in the Black Country
- Via will operate services across the rest of the region
Contract mobilisation is already underway, and TfWM says further updates will be provided as the transformation programme develops.
