In a touching tribute to those who serve, have served, and continue to inspire through service, National Express West Midlands is once again offering free bus travel to members of the Armed Forces community on Armed Forces DaySaturday 28 June 2025. This generous initiative covers the entire West Midlands network, from Solihull to Coventry, Birmingham and beyond, ensuring personnel, veterans, and cadets can travel across the region with ease and dignity.

This act of goodwill, now a well-established tradition for the company, is part of National Express’s broader commitment to recognising and supporting the Armed Forces. It serves as a simple but powerful reminder of the dedication, sacrifice, and courage displayed by military personnel past and present.

How It Works
To make use of the offer, qualifying individuals need only present themselves in uniform, or show a military IDveterans’ ID, or military medal when boarding any National Express West Midlands or Coventry bus. It’s a low-barrier, high-impact gesture that speaks volumes — especially in communities like Solihull, where local ties to the Forces run deep.

“Our Way of Saying Thank You”
Antony Goozee, Managing Director of National Express West Midlands, shared the company’s sentiment:

“We’re proud to support the Armed Forces and deeply value the important role they play in protecting our country. Offering free bus travel on Armed Forces Day is our way of saying thank you to those who have served and continue to serve.

We are also very proud to employ many veterans and current reservists across the business. At this time of year especially, we want to recognise the significant contribution they make to our company and our communities.”

This expression of thanks isn’t just symbolic; it reflects a broader company culture that honours military service not only on commemorative days, but year-round.

A Covenant of Commitment
National Express West Midlands made history in 2012 as the first UK public transport operator to sign the Armed Forces Covenant, pledging to treat service members, veterans, and their families with fairness and respect. In the years since, the company has reinforced this commitment through a host of supportive initiatives — including employment pathways for veteranssupport for reservists, and participation in the Defence Discount Service, offering reduced fares for eligible individuals and their families.

Military-affiliated employees at National Express benefit from flexible scheduling to accommodate training and deployments, while their transferable skills — leadership, discipline, resilience — are actively recognised and appreciated across the organisation.

Solihull’s Enduring Military Connection
Here in Solihull, where Armed Forces Day is marked with both community celebration and quiet reflection, the free travel initiative resonates deeply. Solihull families have local ties to the Forces through cadet organisations, veterans’ networks, and residents whose lives have been shaped by military service.

The free bus rides ensure that those who’ve served can participate in local commemorations and parades without worry or cost. For many, it’s not about the money, it’s about the gesture.

Take John Reardon, a local veteran who served in the Royal Engineers and now lives in Shirley. He put it simply:

“It might seem like a small thing, but being able to jump on a bus without worrying about the fare – just for one day, is a sign that people still remember and value what we did. It’s a simple ‘thank you’, but it means a lot.”

Cadets Included – Celebrating the Future, Too
Importantly, this free travel offer also extends to cadets, who represent the next generation of service and commitment. Groups such as the Army Cadet ForceSea Cadets, and Air Training Corps play vital roles in their communities and frequently participate in Armed Forces Day events. Including them in this initiative reflects a commitment not only to history and tradition, but to nurturing future leaders in the Forces.

How to Take Part
If you or someone you know is a serving member of the military, a veteran, or a cadet, you can access free travel all day on Saturday 28 June by:
